Green roofs as a breath of greenery...

A rooftop garden (planted roof) is defined as the entirety or a portion of a roof surface where interventions are made to install greenery (plantings, lawns, and other ornamental elements).

If I choose to create a rooftop garden in my space, the benefits are numerous for both our environment and the surroundings.

Let’s look at some of these benefits:

  • Increase in greenery, contributing to addressing the heat island phenomenon and reducing atmospheric humidity.
  • Improvement of the aesthetic appeal of the space.
  • Regulation of the microclimate.
  • Reduction of the building's internal temperature by up to -10°C.
  • Provides insulation for the building.

For the construction of a rooftop garden, a specialized study by an agronomist is required to ensure the proper materials are installed to protect the roof from moisture.

In the following image, we can see indicative stages and materials that will be used for the construction.

It’s also important to know what type of rooftop garden we can create in our space. There are three types:

  • Extensive: Low planting with shallow substrate.
  • Semi-intensive: Small shrubs and grass, with a substrate depth of 10-40 cm.
  • Intensive: Taller planting, with a substrate depth of 10 cm to 2.0 m, roof gardens accessible to the public.

The indicative materials that can frame our rooftop garden may include:

  • Natural grass
  • Synthetic grass
  • Plant material of various sizes (depending on the type)
  • Ground cover materials (gravel, pebbles)
