The irrigation of greenery (plants and lawn) is the key factor for the growth and health of our garden. Let’s take a detailed look at the methods used for irrigating plants and lawns to keep them healthy.

PLANT IRRIGATION:

Plant irrigation can be done using the following methods:

1. By hand (watering with a hose)
Using this method, it is quite likely that we may either underwater or overwater our plants, increasing the chances of diseases and weeds in the soil. Additionally, with insufficient watering, we will experience reduced growth or fruiting in our plants.

2. With an irrigation system (drip irrigation)
In this method, irrigation pipes are placed on the ground, and drippers (one or two per plant) are connected to them. This ensures uniform watering, without water waste, and reduces the occurrence of diseases since the plant leaves do not get wet.

LAWN IRRIGATION
As for lawn irrigation, this can be done in two ways:

1. The method of subsurface drip irrigation, where underground pipes are installed, creating a closed system that is not affected by wind and does not obstruct passersby.

2. The sprinkler method (pop-up sprinklers), where sprinklers are connected to underground pipes. This method creates an artificial rain that covers 100% of the lawn area.

AUTOMATIC WATERING

The purpose of an automatic watering system is to water our plants at scheduled times, for specified durations, and with controlled amounts of water.

Usually, we install an automatic watering system when we cannot be present every time the plants need watering.

In general, it consists of:

  • A water source (usually one or more taps)
  • Electric watering valves (solenoid valves)
  • One or more watering timers (battery-operated, electric, or Wi-Fi connected)
  • Irrigation lines (pipes that carry water)
    Outlet/irrigation points

An automatic watering system can be implemented in the garden or on our balcony.

ADVANTAGES OF AUTOMATIC WATERING

The main advantage is that we can use it year-round.Δεν σπαταλάμε νερό, καθώς η ποσότητα που πέφτει είναι αυτή που χρειάζεται κάθε φυτό για ν’ αναπτυχθεί. Επίσης δεν πλημμυρίζει το χώμα γύρω-γύρω απ’ το φυτό, γιατί το νερό πέφτει κοντά στη ρίζα του με τους σταλλάκτες.

  • We do not waste water, as the amount delivered is exactly what each plant needs to grow. Additionally, it does not flood the soil around the plant because the water is directed close to the root with drippers.
  • Our plants are properly watered throughout the day.
  • We can schedule the timer to water for as long and whenever we want, usually when it’s not hot and windy.
  • We can water both small and large plants simultaneously using different drippers.
  • When we have plants in the garden that require different amounts of water or more frequent watering per day, we can create two or more watering zones covered by independent lines.
  • The tap timers operate on alkaline batteries, which last over a year, so no electricity supply is needed for automatic watering.
  • Battery timers with two outlets are available in stores, allowing us to water different areas in our garden (vegetable garden and ornamental plants) with just one timer (cost reduction for automatic watering).
